I started my journey in sales as a sales representative, consistently exceeding targets and demonstrating a keen understanding of international markets. Through hard work, dedication, and a passion for building relationships, I climbed the corporate ladder, eventually taking on the role of International Sales Manager.

Magdalena Borcila: In the childhood and adolescence, I had a fascination with different cultures and a strong desire to explore the world. These visions have translated into my career where I get to engage with diverse cultures and develop business opportunities globally.

It’s fascinating to see how childhood toys had such a strong impact on my career choices and interests. Working in male-dominated industries like construction, tractor engines, combines, and car engines for a significant part of my professional life is a testament to passion and determination. Perhaps early experiences playing with cars and soldiers sparked my curiosity and fascination with machinery and mechanical systems. These childhood toys may have instilled in me a love for problem-solving, engineering, and the desire to excel in traditionally male-dominated fields. My dedication and expertise in these industries demonstrate the ability to break barriers and thrive in areas where women are underrepresented. My background and experiences have undoubtedly shaped my journey and contributed to my success.

I believe in the power of building authentic relationships, as trust and collaboration are key to long-term partnerships. I also value continuous learning and staying adaptable in an ever-changing global business landscape.

C-B: How have the pandemic, economic crises, and wars influenced/influence your professional activity?

Magdalena Borcila: The pandemic, economic crises, and wars have had a significant impact on my professional activity as an International Sales Manager. The global business environment has become more challenging, with travel restrictions and market volatility. However, I have adapted by leveraging technology, exploring new digital sales channels, and focusing on building strong virtual relationships with clients.

C-B: Share some amusing situations from your career!

Magdalena Borcila: Throughout my career, I have encountered amusing situations that have added a touch of humor to my work. From cultural misunderstandings during negotiations to unexpected language barriers during international business trips, these situations have taught me the importance of adaptability, patience, and a sense of humor.

A funny incident now, but crazy at the time, with Brexit in the UK and the pandemic, my job took a different turn and I had to find another opportunity in another country. So, with my cat, child, and „house on my back” I got in the car and set off, to another country where I had received a promising offer. During the pandemic, I drove for 24 hours because everything was closed, only stopping for fuel.

When we reached the border, with all the necessary documents, the customs officer didn’t even want to see the documents, but simply told us that we couldn’t enter no matter what, because we were not residents. After several insistences, they pulled their guns on us and surrounded us like thieves.

So, after 24 hours of driving, confident that I could enter that country, I was forced to turn back. However, because it was nearly midnight and there were no hotels open, I tried to enter through another border, but I couldn’t. Nevertheless, I returned to the same border where the shift had changed, and I found another person who, after long pleading, agreed to look at the documents and, in the end, we managed to enter.  Everything is possible – my mindset
